Attracting Birds You Want Is Easy

I love attracting birds. I'll try it about anywhere. Just outside Bird Watchers' Haven, my store, there's a grassy knoll with a tree. It's situated in the middle of a parking lot. The busy West Lowry Lane is but 20 feet away. Pedestrians are everywhere.

To date, my stations has produced a bunch of species. Take a look at the list:

  1. American Goldfinch
  2. Red-bellied Woodpecker
  3. House Finch
  4. Mallard
  5. English Sparrow
  6. White-throated sparrow
  7. Cardinal
  8. Blue jay
  9. Grackle
  10. Starling
  11. Carolina Chickadee
  12. Dark-eyed Junco
  13. Carolina Wren
  14. Robin
  15. Eastern Towhee
  16. Sharp-shinned Hawk
  17. Rose-breasted Grosbeak

That's seventeen species, folks! If my efforts at attracting birds to the middle of a parking lot with only 3 feeders results in this, the potential of your backyard is limitless!!

I recently had a customer bounce into my store and exclaim “you would not believe the blessing I just received.” I inquired and learned that she had brought her car to a screaming halt aside the local water reservoir. Low-and-behold, this is what she looked upon:

  • Lesser scaup

  • Belted Kingfisher

  • Blue Heron

  • Wood Duck

Pretty cool, ey! And she’s right. It's an important lesson. The wonders of wildlife are all around us. Keep open your eyes. Be aware. You never what you might see.
